SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.14 g, 2 h), circa 405-400. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in both, driving fast quadriga left; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath held in both hands; in exergue, dolphin left. Rev. ΣYPAKOΣIΩ-N Head of Arethusa to left, hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back, wearing double-loop earring and plain necklace with frontal pendant; around, four dolphins. BMC 217-8. Dewing 849. SNG ANS 290 (all from the same dies). Tudeer 82 (V30/R55). Excellent style. Struck somewhat off center and with some corrosion on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
